Traditional crafts
In Japanese villages there have long been many crafts, for example, making baskets and hats from bamboo and straw, making wooden footwear (geta), clay dishes, etc. At present, such crafts are preserved in villages as well as in towns, where families not connected with agriculture are engaged in them. There are also specialized types of crafts, in which masters are engaged who transfer their knowledge from generation to generation. Refined ceramics, thin porcelain that reminds of egg shell; various fabrics, bronze mirrors, censers and other metal items; a great number of lacquer objects – this whole world of objects is tightly connected with the history of the Japanese people and their spiritual world.
