The total area is 1566 thousand square km. Maximum latitude length – about 2400 km, longitude length – over 1250 km. Over 80% of the country’s territory lies at an altitude of more than 1000 m above sea level; the average altitude is almost 1600 m. The lowest and flattest part of the country is the Eastern-Mongolian region. The highest point – Mount Monch Chajrchan  (Mönh Hayrhan Uul)– is 4362 m and is located in the mountain range Mongolian Altai. The lowest lake cavities are Buyr Nuur (583 m) and Huh Nuur (553 m). Due to deep cooling of exposed lands in the north of the country, there are areas of permafrost; in this latitude there are no other permafrost areas in the world. Through the territory of Mongolia passes the world watershed between the Arctic and the Pacific Ocean. The largest rivers of Mongolia: Selenge, Kerulen, Orhon, Onon. The largest river is Selenge. It flows for 600 km on Mongolian territory, then flows into Russian territory and into Lake Baikal. The largest lakes are Hubsugul, Uvs-Nuur, Hara Nuur, Orog Nuur.
