Population

Mongolia is the country of almost a single nationality. Over 90% of its population is formed by Mongols once joined by Turkic groups that spoke different dialects of the Mongolian language. The core of the Mongolian nation is formed by Khalkha-Mongols (the Khalkhas). It is considered that they formed as an independent people about 16th century between the rivers Onon and Kerulen. At present the Khalkha-Mongols are scattered throughout the country, but most of them live in the central, eastern and southern regions.

The west of the country is populated by descendants of west Mongols - Oirats: Bayaads, Zahchins, Dorvods, Torguuds and Oolds.  Some of them form artificial ethnic groups created in the 17th century by Dzungar khans to protect their lands from Manchurian troops. The term «torguud» meant palace’s day’s guard, and «bayaad» - the khan’s personal armed force. At present these groups are more and more approaching the Khalkha-Mongols.

Apart from Mongolians the Mongolian People’s Republic is populated by other groups of people who speak the Mongolian language: Buryats, Urianhai, Darhads. Among non-Mongolian ethnic groups are the Tuvans, the Kazakhs, the Russians, the Chinese, etc. In general there are about 20 different ethnic groups. Typical features of their appearance are tanned skin, wide and flat faces, wide, non-prominent nose; slanting eyes; round massive cranium and other featers typical of the Mongolian race and it Central-Asian type.
