Traditional way of life

The Mongolians’ traditional way of life is connected with the peculiarities of nomadic economy and is best adapted to it. A nomad finds refuge from summer heat, hot winds and winter cold in a yurt – a mobile, easily folding dwelling. Everything inside and outside a yurt was made most of products of cattle-breeding. Utensils of a nomadic cattle-breeder number almost 70 objects; their classical shapes established through centuries-long use.

Felt was made of sheep wool; animal skins were used to cover the floor; musical instruments were covered with paunch – dried and specially processed animal rumen, and strings for them were made of horsehair and small intestines of sheep and goats.

Light, compact furniture was also well adapted to the nomadic way of life. Beds, stools, cupboards and drawers could be easily disassembled and reassembled. Products of cattle-breeding also formed the basis for the national cuisine.

Some achievements of the nomadic culture have become property of the humanity in general. It is due to nomads that people have harness and saddle with stirrups for horse-riding, light portable tents, ways of preserving dairy products, the art of felt making. The Mongolians contributed to all of the above
