Clothes of the Unaligmiut Eskimos

The Unaligmiut people made their own Parkas (long plain shirts) mostly from deer fur. Men’s parkas were down to one’s knees, women’s parkas – a little longer. The hem of men’s parkas was straight, while the hem of women’s parkas was semi-oval with side cuts. Winter parkas had hoods. The hem, the hood and the sleeves were edged with wolf fur. Besides parkas men wore fur pants with fur inside, and women wore short pelvis covers also fur inside and pants fur outside. Traditional boots (torbasa) were knee-high or higher. They were made of deer or seal skin with fur outside. The sole was sown separately. The torbasa were worn most of the year, but in the summer they were replaced with lighter wicker footwear made of vegetative fiber. In cold weather people wore muttons.
