Baskets for boiling food

ИCalifornian Indians made waterproof baskets. The braiding was so tight that they almost did not let any water and could serve for boiling food. When heated the twigs that baskets were made of swelled which prevented water from leaking. To boil food red-hot stones were put in a basked; stones that grew cold were taken out and new hot stones were thrown into it. These baskets were braided from young roots and cedar, pine, fir, maple or nut-tree wigs and decorated with prominent geometrical patterns, shells and pearl plates. In the Museum there is a collection of rare braided baskets from California.
