Wigwam

The Indian dwelling of frame type is usually referred to as wigwam. The dome-shaped wigwam was the main type of dwelling of the Algonquin people. Usually the frame had the form of a dome – flexible poles were bended and tied together. Sometimes straight poles were used, and then the construction was conical in shape. The wigwam is not much different from the Siberian chum. Pieces of birch bark sown together or cane mats, and sometimes animal skins, served as covering. On top of the dwelling a flue hole was left. In the center of such dwelling fire could be made. The floor was covered with animal skins or marsh grass. Beddings made of branches and covered with skins served as beads and seats.
