Population
China is a world top country as far as the number of population is concerned, leaving all the other states far behind. Currently the population size of China constitutes some 1.3 billion people.
China is one of the most densely populated countries of the world. The average population density equals 134 people per square km. The population of China is quite unevenly distributed. Population density varies strikingly, with the greatest contrast occurring between the eastern half of China (more than 400 people per 1 square km), in Central China - more than 200 people per square km and the highlands of the west - less than 10 people per square km. Exceptionally high population densities occur in the Yangtze Delta, in the Pearl River Delta, and on the Ch'eng-tu Plain of the western Szechwan Basin. Dense population of China determines the numerous peculiarities of its civilization in its manifold manifestations, such as everyday life and traditional ideals of life.
The Chinese are many, and the territory they inhabit is so diverse, vast and extensive, that the existence of some ethno cultural differences is inevitable between the citizens of various regions. The main demarcation line in everyday life and culture is preconditioned by the Yangtze territory division into the Northern and the Southern parts of the country. The population of the North is more homogeneous in the language, culture and economy, than that in the South, which had survived several colonization waves from the North. There exist a multitude of local dialects in the South and the native speakers are not always able to explicate and understand each other while conversing.
