The total area of Indochina, which is the world third largest peninsula, is about 2 million square kilometers. The largest (according to its territory) country on the Peninsula is Burma (since 1989 officially called Myanmar) – 678 thousand sq km; the second largest is Thailand (514 thousand sq km). The area of Vietnam is 330 thousand s km; of Laos – 237 thousand sq km; of Cambodia (Khmer Kampuchea) – 181 thousand sq km. The smallest country on the peninsula is the city-state of Singapore with the area of 0.6 thousand sq km.
In most areas the altitude does not exceed 2000 m, but some peaks reach 3000 – 4000 m. The average rainfall is 1000-2500 (in some areas over 3000) mm a year. The average annual temperature is 26 Centigrade. The hottest month is April, when the temperature reaches 30 Centigrade. The longest river of South-West Asia is Mekong (4500 km). It is characterized by rapid stream: even in flat areas the speed of the current reaches 4-5 m/second. The Sap Lake in Kampuchea is one of the world richest in terms of fish resources. Some trees in humid rainforests are up to 60 m high, while the majority of tree crowns are located at a height of 20 m. The South China Sea is the largest of the ten lakes of the Pacific Ocean washing South-East Asia. The Philippine cavity is over 10 thousand meters deep.
