Figures and facts
The total area of the continent is 30 million square km. The largest latitude length is about 7500 km; the largest longitude length is almost 8000 km. The average altitude above sea level is 750 m. West Africa is flatter than South and East Africa. African mountains (the Abyssinian Highlands in Ethiopia, Futa-Jallon in Guinea, etc.) are relatively low. The highest mountain is Kilimanjaro on the border of Tanzania and Kenya (5895 m). The Nile, the longest river in the world (6671 km), is located in Africa, followed by Congo (4320 km) and Niger (4160 km). The border between Eastern and Central Africa is formed by a chain of lakes, the largest of which is Lake Victoria (68,800 km2), and the deepest is Lake Tanganyika (1470 m). The world’s largest desert, Sahara, is also located in Africa.
