The exhibition “In the Mirrors of Time. Peoples of Russia through the Eyes of Photographers at the Turn of the 19th–20th Centuries (from the Collections of St. Petersburg Kunstkamera)” was opened in Slovenia
On May 25, 2011 the Russian cultural center in Ljubljana (Slovenia) held the opening of the exhibition titled "In the Mirrors of Time. Peoples of Russia through the Eyes of Photographers at the Turn of the 19th–20th Centuries (from the Collections of St. Petersburg Kunstkamera)".
The exhibition project was organized within the frames of activities of the World Public Forum "Dialog of Civilizations" in cooperation with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Slovenia and Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo).
Doku Zavgaev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation in Slovenia, Zarina Medoeva, Vice-President of the Center for National Glory and member of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, Rifat Pateev, Director of the Russian Cultural Center in Slovenia, Saša Geržina, President of the "Slovenia – Russia" Friendship Association and the first Ambassador of Republic of Slovenia in the Russian Federation, Prof. Efim Rezvan, Deputy-director of St. Petersburg Kunstkamera, representatives of non-governmental organizations, Ljubljana museum community and mass-media took part in the solemn ceremony of the exhibition opening.
Fifty masterpieces of photography chosen for the exhibition present one of the most important photographic collections devoted to the peoples of Russia and stored now in St. Petersburg Kunstkamera. Most important part of the collection belongs to the second part of the 19th century. Among the photographs presented at the exhibition one can find the works of such famous photo-artists as William Carrick, F. Hordet and Samuel Dudin. The project is naturally connected with the history of the Russian ethnology. In many cases the photographs were shot by such famous scholars as Lev Sternberg, Vladimir Iohelsohn, Bernhard Petri, Sergey Shirokogorov, Nadejda Dyrenkova, Dmitriy Bubrikh.
The exhibition project presents the main treasure of Russia – its people. It is devoted to the Russia's civilization alternative focused on the consideration for the national cultures and unique ability to live together while remaining diverse.
The exhibition continues the Museum project "In the Mirrors of Time" and is accompanied by the catalogue in Russian and Slovenian.
