"Believe but your own eyes / Geloof alleen je eigen ogen". Frederik Ruysch (1638 - 1731), anatomist, champion of modern science
The Library of the Amsterdam University holds ""Believe but your own eyes/ Geloof alleen je eigen ogen". Frederik
Ruysch (1638 - 1731), anatomist, champion of modern science"". The
exhibition is associated with the publication of of Ruysch's biography by Luuc
Kooijmans "De doodskunstenaar: de anatomische lessen van Frederik Ruysch".
The exhibition is dedicated to life and work
of Amsterdam professor, anatomist, surgeon and city father Frederik Ruysch who
turned anatomy and dissecting into art. "See for yourself" - was his motto. In
other words: not to believe anything based on another's authority, without
having seen it with one's own eyes. The motto in his guestbook was: "Vene, vidi
et judical nil tuis crede oculis" (Come, see and judge, believe only your own
eyes).
The Peter the Great Museum of
Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) RAS provided three specimens from
Frederik Ruysch's natural-scientific collection bought by Russian Imperator Peter
I.
