When the Mammoths Roamed
The Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris,
France houses the exhibition When the Mammoths Roamed. The prominent museums of
France, Germany, Russia, Czech, Poland, Ukraine, the USA took part in this
international project.
The exhibition tells
both about mammoth environment, mammoth's appearance and behavior and the myths
associated with mammoths - believes in titanic ancestors-patrons, unicorns and
giants, as well as about European and Russian academic studies of this
fossilized animal.
The Peter the Great
Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) RAS provided 15 tusk
artifacts, among them there are 5 female figures, so-called Paleolithic Venuses.
Such female sculptures are characterized by exaggerated naturalism,
amplification of female characters. The absolute age of the figures is 23 - 21
thousand years. They were found under excavations of the Paleolithic settlements
Kostenki 1 (at Kostenki village, near the city of Voronezh) and Gagarino (at
Gagarino village, the Lipetsk Region).
