Important concepts about honour exist in all traditional groups of the Yemeni population — from the descendents of the prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam, to traders, craftsmen, ploughmen, unskilled labourers, servants etc. The guardians of great valour are the tribes, and there are hundreds of them in this area. A tribesman is steadfast before the blows of fate, and prepared to sacrifice his life for his clan and his native land. Invaders — Romans, Persians, Ethiopians, Portuguese, Turks, and British — always encountered worthy resistance here. Yemenite tribes became famous during the Arab conquests of the 7th—12th centuries, which turned Islam into a world religion. And today, a member of the tribe is above all a warrior who hands down the weapons of his ancestors from generation to generation — a straight short sword, a spear with a faceted tip for penetrating chain armour, and a dagger and verses praising the deeds of heroes.
