About Project

The on-line catalogue introduces the collection on traditional culture of the Tlingit – the American Indians inhabiting the North-West of Alaska. Up to 1867 Alaska, along with some other territories, was part of Russian Empire (Russian America), and then the lands were sold to the USA. Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences houses the earliest, in terms of time of collection, items of the Russian America’s peoples. First ones found themselves in Kunstkamera in 1790. Russian sailors, travelers, employees of the Russian-American Company, the Russian Orthodox missionaries have been gathering and granting Tlingit and other Alaska’s peoples collections to Kunstkamera for over 100 years. Due to efforts of Yuri Lisyanskiy, Vasily Golovnin, Ilya Voznesenskiy and other Russian researchers nowadays the Museum houses over 300 items on the Tlingit culture.
