My presentation will demonstrate the different types of rock art in California. I want to show that some things are required to understand and appreciate Native California rock art. First I want to focus on how nature surounding the people who made it affected what it looked like. Additionally I want to explain how age and variability of this rock art is also im- portant. The main aim of my presentation is to describe different rock art traditions in California: Far Western Pit and Groove Tradition, California Tradition with different variants, Great Basin Tradition also divided into variants, Earth Figure Tradition and Plateau Tradition. I want to address these artistic traditions which emphasize three considerations: the distribu- tion across the state, techniques used to create this art and the ethnographically demonstrated functions and meanings of the art. In the presentation I will explain how they were distributed and what they portray.
