January 29, 2024
On Friday, January 26, the MAE (Kunstkamera) RAS was visited for the first time by the Ambassador of Mexico to the Russian Federation, Eduardo Villegas Mejias, and his wife. They were accompanied by the newly appointed Honorary Consul of Mexico in St. Petersburg, Andrey Kuznetsov, and a staff member of the Consulate of Peru, Ilya Mikhailov.

The guests were greeted at the Museum by Deputy Director for Research Vladimir Davydov, Senior Researcher of the Department of Ethnography of South and South-West Asia Elena Soboleva, Junior Researcher of the Department of Ethnography of America Olga Kondakova and Leading Specialist in International Relations of the MAE RAS Ksenya Maretina. At the meeting participants discussed the prospects and opportunities for cooperation between the MAE RAS and Mexican ethnographic museums and state universities. Staff members of the MAE RAS also told the guests about the American collections of the museum.

At the end of the meeting, Mr. Eduardo Villegas Mejias got acquainted with the memorial plaque to Yuri Knorozov, an outstanding Soviet and Russian researcher who deciphered the Mayan writing. The memorial plaque was inaugurated on the façade of the Kunstkamera museum building in the Tamozhenny Lane on November 20, 2023.

For reference: in Mexico, Yuri Knorozov is highly valued precisely for his work on deciphering the Mayan writing, and in two Mexican cities – Cancun and Merida – monuments to Yuri Knorozov have been erected.
