International Workshop: The Archaeology of Yuzhniy Oleniy Ostrov (Lake Onega). State of research, new studies and interpretations
St.-Petersburg, Kunstkamera Museum, 3 Universitetskaya naberezhnaya
October 12-13, 2018
The purpose of the workshop is to gather the people who have conducted studies of the YOO complex to discuss and present their research and interpretations. Yuzhniy Oleniy Ostrov is among the most famous prehistoric burial sites in Northern Europe. The first excavation at the site took place in 1936, and the fieldwork continued for three field seasons until the research had to be ceased due to the outbreak of World War II. A new survey of the island was organized in the 1990s, when a group of researchers from Petrozavodsk and St Petersburg launched an archaeological expedition on the island. Following these surveys, excavations of two campsites on the shores of the island were carried out from 2005 to 2007. The material from the new surveys and excavations has broadened our understanding of the Mesolithic activities on the island. At the same time, the materials from graves obtained during the older excavation phase are taken under re-analysis; several new studies have been launched and new methods applied.
