The XVII Congress of the Russian Geographical Society successfully completed its work
President of Russia Vladimir Putin participated in the work of the XVII Congress of the Russian Geographical Society held at the State Kremlin Palace and congratulated the RGO on its anniversary. The event brought together about 216 delegates representing all levels of the RGO structure: the Executive Council, Academic Council, Council of Elders, regional branches, etc.
Delegates summed up the activities of the society over the past five years, discussed plans for the future until 2030 and key areas of activity until 2035. Special attention was paid to enhancing the prestige of the geographer profession and supporting patriotic education among young people. Reports were presented by heads of main commissions of the RGO devoted to such directions as tourism, ecology, scientific enlightenment and youth movement.
Sergei Shoigu, President of the RGO, was unanimously re-elected to head the organization again. Highlighting the successes of the last five years, he emphasized the important role of geographers in shaping the national identity of younger generations based on love for their homeland. The merits of geoscientists, teachers and public activists received high recognition from both the state and the RGO itself: many were awarded honorary distinctions.
Andrei Golovnev, director of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, joined the Academic Council of the Society.
President of Russia Vladimir Putin proposed establishing a new holiday — Day of the Geographer, and announced that 2027 would be designated as the Year of Geography.
