Visit of the Sri Lanka Delegation to the Museum

April 5, 2026

On this day, the museum welcomed an official delegation from the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The delegation was led by the Minister of Transport, Roads and Urban Development of Sri Lanka, and the Leader of Parliament, Mr. Bimal Niroshan Ratnayake Veerakoon. The delegation also included the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation, Ms. Shobini Kaushala Gunaskera.

As part of the visit, the museum's staff conducted a tour for the guests, highlighting the exhibition "Nikolaev Hall: Peoples of South Asia," which showcases unique collections related to the history and culture of the region. The delegation also explored the halls of "Peter's Kunstkamera" and "Multinational Russia." During the tour in Nikolaev Hall, special attention was given to collections related to the island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) held in the museum's archives.

The visit of the Sri Lankan delegation coincided with their participation in an international transport and logistics forum taking place in St. Petersburg. During meetings with city government representatives, discussions focused on the prospects for developing tourism, transport, and economic cooperation between Russia and Sri Lanka. St. Petersburg traditionally attracts foreign tourists as one of Russia's leading cultural centers and a convenient starting point for travels in the northwest of the country. To strengthen tourism exchange, both sides proposed developing joint press tours and increasing participation in relevant international events.
